Early morning wreck leaves one person dead in south Amarillo

Early Monday morning, Amarillo police officers were dispatched to motor vehicle collision in the 5700 block of South Georgia.

A 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by a 23 year old male, had been southbound on Georgia Street. The driver lost control of his vehicle, crossed over the northbound lanes and struck a steel power transmission pole on the eastside of the road.

The Cavalier continued south for about half a block before coming to a rest.

Investigators said the driver was transported to a local area hospital where he later died of his injuries. The identity of the driver will be released when next of kin has been notified.

Speed is a factor in this crash.

This incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
