Allen West speaking at WTAMU

West Texas A&M University is hosting Col. Allen West to give a presentation on “The Life and Legacy of Booker T. Washington” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center, Legacy Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

West served as Lt. Col. in the Army as well as an American political commentator, author and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Last month, he announced his candidacy for the Texas GOP chair in 2020, challenging current party leader James Dickey. West’s career spans military service and policymaking, which included extensive work with the Booker T. Washington Initiative at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.

Born a Virginia slave in 1856, Washington grew to become a prominent leader in education and an advocate for self-reliance in the African American community. He founded the Tuskegee Institute, a black school in Alabama devoted to training teachers, and helped establish the National Negro Business League. He also served as an adviser to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft.
