Man arrested after attempting to choke APD officer

Sunday evening, Amarillo police officers were called to a residence in the 8200 block of Laredo Trail on an assault in progress.

A person told officers that Patrick Dean Smith, 42, had assaulted a female and that he was armed with a gun. The caller told officers that the female was injured from the assault and that there was also a child inside.

When the first officer arrived, Smith exited the door of the residence and clenched his fists and took a fighting stance. Patrick refused commands from the officer and then retreated back inside.

The officer pursued Patrick into the residence. With the mention of a gun in the call, the officer did not want Smith to be out of his sight.

The officer reached his arm into the door and deployed his Taser at Smith. Smith made an evasive maneuver causing the Taser probes to miss him and strike a 74 year old female.

Smith then grabbed the officer by the throat with his hand. The officer was able to use his Taser on Smith at this time to break the hold.

The suspect continued to struggle with the officer until back up arrived.

Smith was arrested for evading arrest/detention, assault on a public servant, and resisting arrest. He was booked into the Randall County Jail.
