With the announcement on Monday that US Representative Mac Thornberry would not be seeking re-election, Amarillo city councilwoman Elaine Hays announced she is exploring a second run for congress.

"I want to thank Congressman Mac Thornberry for his years of public service to the people of the 13th district. I wish him and his family well.

"After much prayer and reflection, and with encouragement from my family, friends, and neighbors, I have decided to explore running for Congress in the 13th district.

"We need to send someone to Washington who will fight for life, liberty, term limits, a balanced budget, and secure borders. We also need someone who will stand up to the far left in Congress and will fight for the conservative values of the 13th district," Hays said.

Hays earned a Master of Science in Finance and Economics from West Texas A&M, BBA in Marketing from Texas Christian University (TCU) and completed her designation as a Certified Financial Planner from the College for Financial Planning. As a private wealth manager through Hays and Hays Financial Services, she works with individuals to help identify, communicate, and achieve their financial goals.

In the past, Hays has been active in the community as a board member for CareNet Pregnancy Center and Mission 2540, as well as participating in Leadership Amarillo/Canyon and Community FOR Country. She also serves as the Welcome Center coordinator at Messiahs House.

In 2014, Hays challenged Thornberry in the 13th Congressional District GOP primary. Thornberry easily defeated Hays and Pam Barlow with 68% of the vote.
