West Texas A&M head football coach Hunter Hughes has announced a number of adjustments to the WT coaching staff for the 2019 season, including the addition of Javon Harris as the defensive backs coach.

"Javon brings the experience of playing at the University of Oklahoma and has coached at different college levels during his short, successful career," Hughes said. "What we really liked was the way he presented himself as a teacher of young men. He is sharp on his fundamentals and the way he can help our players using his experience is going to make us that much better."

Harris comes to Canyon following a stint at Troy as a graduate assistant where he worked with the safeties. Prior to working with the Trojans, he spent a season at Coffeyville Community College where he mentored First Team All-KJCCC selection Markquese Bell and Second Team All-KJCCC selections McArthur Burnett and Malik Smith. He also spent time at Crandall High School and Frisco High School.

Harris signed with the Arizona Cardinals after an outstanding four-year career at the University of Oklahoma where he appeared in 44 games including 21 starts at safety. During his senior season in 2012 he tied for 11thin the nation and third in the Big 12 in interceptions with six while ranking second on the team in total tackles. He was also named the Big 12 and Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week as a junior after picking off two passes against Florida State. Prepped at MacArthur High School in Lawton, Oklahoma where he was a SuperPrep All-American.

Hughes also announced Rodney Freeman has been named Special Teams Coordinator to go along with his wide receiver duties while Cooper Bassett has been named the Run Game Coordinator for the offensive unit.

"Rodney was operating under this role last year without an official title," Hughes added. "I know our special teams played a role in our success last season as we were one of the best teams in the nation in blocked punts. Cooper has been an integral part of our offense since we arrived her in 2017. He continues to lead the offensive line that has improved every year through his tenure, evident by Travis Vornkahl joining the Cleveland Browns recently."

The Buffs open the 2019 season on Sept. 7 when they host Azusa Pacific in the inaugural game at Buffalo Stadium at 6 pm.
