Amarillo to host ribbon-cutting for S.E. 10th Ave. BNSF Railroad underpass mural

A ribbon-cutting event for the S.E. 10th Ave. BNSF Railroad underpass mural is scheduled for Aug. 5 (Monday). The event begins at 6 p.m. at S.E. 10th Ave. near the mural site. Parking is available at the Fiesta Foods employee parking lot at S.E. 10th Ave. and Arthur Street.

The mural is part of the Barrio Neighborhood Plan, and is connected to Center City.

The goal of the mural project is to showcase a welcome to the Barrio that celebrates the culture and architectural history of the Barrio.

The north side wall of the mural contains images representing Center City for motorists driving westward into downtown. The south side wall contains images representing the Barrio for those driving eastward into the neighborhood.

The mural was created by artist Joey Martinez, who will attend the ribbon-cutting event, along with members of the Barrio Neighborhood Planning Committee and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Funding for the mural ($25,000) and base coat ($27,775) came from city/county neighborhood planning funding.
