Amarillo ISD school board votes to change name of Lee Elementary to Park Hills Elementary

Monday night, the Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees voted to change the name of Lee Elementary School to Park Hills Elementary School.

“I think that it’s consistent with the wave across the country, a lot of these schools they are changing their names to something that is more celebratory as opposed to divisive.

“Consider what the name Robert E. Lee means and what he represented, and how can we have students whose ancestors were targets of his racism—how can we tell those students to walk into this school on a daily basis and not let that affect them psychologically?” AISD school board president Robin Malone said.

AISD Superintendent Doug Loomis said the name change will cost the district about $25,000.

“It is really a pretty minor cost. One, because we’re in the middle of a bond project, and that bond project was already scheduled to put a new marquee up, which is about $20,000.

“There’s probably a few ancillary costs, somewhere below $5,000, to change some lettering on the school, but by and large, it’s a pretty minimal cost to change the name from Lee Elementary to Park Hills Elementary," Loomis said.

Loomis said the district should have the name change completed by the start of the new school year.
