WT's Fatim Affessi wins third straight long jump national title

West Texas A&M's Fatim Affessi won her third straight long jump title on the first day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas as the Lady Buffs sit in a tie for third with 10 points.

Affessi won her third long jump title in as many tries on the fourth attempt of the competition with a wind-aided mark of 20-7.25 (6.28m) to leapfrog Ansley Long of Shorter. The junior opened the competition with a leap of 19-7 (5.97m) before improving to 20-3.5 (6.18m) on her second attempt to move up to second place behind Long's jump of 20-6.25 (6.25m). The winning mark came on her first attempt of the final making WT the second school to win the men's and women's long jump title in the same championships and first since 1989.

The women's 4x100 meter relay of Kennedy Hudson, Blayre Catalyn, Natasha Brown and Kayla Wilson qualified for Saturday's final finishing third in their heat and fifth overall in 46.65. Hudson also competed in the 100 meter dash where she finished 13thin 11.75. Tianna McKinney finished 14thin the 400 meters running 56.16 while Nele Heinrich finished 19thin 56.97.

The Lady Buffs return for day two of the championships on Friday, May 24, beginning with the women's discus throw at 1:30 p.m.
