Sod Poodles fall to RockHounds 9-8

Sod Poodles
The Amarillo Sod Poodles dropped game one of their three-game series with the Midland RockHounds by a final score of 9-8 in front of a crowd of 4,387. Buddy Reed and Owen Miller each recorded four-hit games which is the first time in franchise history a Sod Poodles player has reached that feat.

The Midland RockHounds wasted no time Monday night as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Luke Persico tripled to the right-field corner which allowed Mikey White and Chase Calabuig to score. In the bottom of the inning the Sod Poodles responded with two runs of their own when Taylor Kohlwey belted a two-run home run to deep right field to knot the ballgame up at 2-2.

In the bottom of the second, the Amarillo offense exploded for four runs on five hits. Reed got the scoring started with his seventh home run of the season which sailed over the left field wall. Edward Olivares then hit a two-RBI double to left field which plated Rodrigo Orozco and Taylor Kohlwey. Miller finished off the inning with an RBI double of his own to give the Sod Poodles the 6-2 advantage.

Starting pitcher Adrian Morejon finished his outing Monday night after tossing two innings of three-hit baseball. Morejon allowed two runs and struck out five Midland batters. The start was the first for Morejon since April 22 at Springfield when he left the contest with an arm injury.

Midland right fielded Greg Deichmann cut the Amarillo lead to 6-3 in the third inning when he hit an RBI double to left field which plated Mikey White. The RockHounds continued to chip away at the Amarillo lead in the fourth inning when Robert Mullen hit a two-run home run to center field to make the score 6-5.

In the bottom of the fifth, Amarillo extended their lead to 8-5 via a Webster Rivas RBI single and then Reed roped a single to right center field which allowed Rivas to come around and score.

During the eighth inning, the RockHounds would threaten as they scored one run to narrow the Sod Poodles lead to 8-6 but left two runners on base. The Midland run came courtesy of a Kevin Merrell RBI single.

In the top of the ninth, Midland scored three runs to come all the way back to take the lead 9-8. Luis Barrera started off the inning with a solo home run to right field. The RockHounds then plated two runs via a sacrifice bunt with a throwing error by pitcher Kazuhisa Makita. The Sod Poodles came up in the bottom of the inning with a chance to win the ballgame but were retired in order as they fell to the RockHounds by a final score of 9-8.

The Sod Poodles and RockHounds will resume their three-game series Tuesday night at when right-handed pitcher Kyle Lloyd takes the mound for Amarillo. Lloyd will face off against Midland righty James Naile. Gates are scheduled to open at 6:00 pm.
