Amarillo police and firefighters responded to a wreck in downtown Amarillo Monday morning involving two Sanford Fritch school buses.

The Sanford-Fritch ISD Administration notified at approximately 9:30 a.m. by the Amarillo Police Department that two district buses with approximately 80 elementary students on board were involved in an accident in downtown Amarillo while on field trip.

“One bus ran into the back of another bus. The first one went to stop at the stoplight and the other did not see it stop and ran into the back of it," Amarillo Police Department Cpl. Jeb Hilton said.

Investigators confirmed 55 passengers were taken to Northwest Texas Hospital by ambulance and private vehicles. None of the injuries were life threatening.

South Taylor street was closed to traffic for several hours. The Amarillo PD Traffic Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Unit are investigating this incident.
