Olivares homers Sod Poodles past Travelers 8-5

Amarillo Sod Poodles
Amarillo Sod Poodles outfielder Edward Olivares made franchise history Sunday afternoon with his first career three-home run game, leading the Amarillo squad to an 8-5 victory over the Arkansas Travelers to even the series at 1-1 in front of 6,818 spectators. He finished the afternoon going 3-for-5 with three runs and five RBI on his three consecutive home runs.

Padres' rehabber tossed 61 pitches over three innings Sunday afternoon in his first rehab start with Amarillo, allowing two hits, no runs, three walks while striking out two.

In the first inning, the Sod Poodles rallied early momentum once again with three quick runs.

After Rodrigo Orozco led off with a single to left field, Olivares slugged a deep fly ball off of the centerfield wall which bounced back toward to middle of the outfield, sending him around for an inside-the-park home run to give Amarillo a two-run advantage. After a double by Kyle Overstreet to restart the frame, a Webster Rivas groundout combined with a throwing error on Ivan Castillo's groundout would be good enough to plate Overstreet to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

In the Sod Poodles second, the team turned it on once again sparked by Buddy Reed's one-out double. With two outs, Olivares connected with a 2-1 pitch and sent it over the left field wall for his second home run of the game. Hudson Potts and Overstreet followed with a double and a single respectively to make it a 6-0 game.

In the fifth, Arkansas finally struck the scoring column when Evan White led the frame off with a solo home run to left field.

However, the daytime fireworks sponsored by Olivares continued when he led off the bottom half with a third home run on the afternoon, a solo shot to left field. Potts backed him up with another solo home run, his fifth of the season, to extend to an 8-1 lead.

The Travelers tacked on three more runs in the sixth thanks to Aaron Knapp's triple to the gap in centerfield, scoring a batter later on Joe DeCarlo's groundout, and Dom Thompson-Williams' three-run home run with two outs to make it an 8-4 difference.

In the ninth, Arkansas cut the Amarillo lead down to 8-5 with a Nick Zammarelli RBI double to center field. The RBI double was the only run of the inning as Amarillo reliever Kazuhisa Makita capped off the game with a strikeout to even the series at 1-1.

The Sod Poodles will enter into game three of the four-game set with the Seattle Mariners Double-A affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers, tomorrow evening with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. In game three, Sod Poodles right-hander Lake Bachar will face off against Arkansas righty Nabil Crismatt .
