Officer involved shooting in downtown Amarillo: One person dead


The Amarillo Police Department Special Crimes Unit is investigating an officer involved shooting Late Wednesday afternoon in the 1000 block of South Johnson Street. No officers were injured in the incident.

Investigators have confirmed that the suspect in the shooting was pronounced dead at the scene.

APD officers made a stop on a vehicle containing 22 year old Isaac Ray Ruiz. Ruiz was wanted for a parole violation with the original charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The vehicle stopped at southeast 10th Avenue and south Johnson Street and Ruiz got out and started running south in the 1000 block of South Johnson Street. As Ruiz ran, he fired multiple rounds at officers.

Officers returned fire striking the Ruiz. Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another male and female fled the scene in the vehicle. The suspect vehicle was later involved in a crash on Johnson street and I-40. The driver and passenger were detained.
