Lady Buffs season ends at NCAA South Central Regional

The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M saw their season come to an end on Friday night in Kingsville, Texas with a 7-5 loss to Oklahoma Christian in the South Central Regional at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field.

WTAMU got on the board in the top of the first inning scoring three runs on four consecutive hits including a triple from Shanna McBroom. Kylee Moore reached base on an error followed by McBroom's third triple of the season to right center. Ruby Salzman was up next and sent a liner to right to plate McBroom before stealing second to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Starkey made it three straight hits with another liner up the middle to plate Salzman. OC responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning on Kaylie Upton's fielder's choice to the shortstop.

The lead was down to one, 3-2, in the top of the fourth when Kourtney Coveney drove in her first run of the game on a bases loaded walk. WT showed their patience recording three walks combined with a single from Amelya Huggins to make it a two-run game. The Eagles responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning scoring five runs on two hits to take a 7-4 lead.

WT got a run back in the top of the sixth inning on Moore's solo shot to right field giving her 17 on the season and 64 for her career. After holding the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Buffs had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh but consecutive fly balls ended the game.

Kyra Lair (14-6) got the start going 3 2/3 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Coveney was impressive in relief not allowing a hit over 2 1/3 innings while striking out three.
