Lady Buffs in first place after day 2 of national championship meet

The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M ended the second day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in first place with 24 points, five clear of second-place Grand Valley State, after a pair of All-American performances in the discus.

In the only final of the day for WT, Zada Swoopes and Norma Cunigan picked up 14 points with a 2-3 finish in the discus where Swoopes broke the school record twice. The sophomore finished second with a personal best toss of 182-8 (55.68m) on her fourth attempt of the competition. She originally broke the record on her third attempt with a mark of 181-3 (55.25m). Cunigan finished her collegiate career with a third-place finish with a seasonal best mark of 176-7 (53.83m) on her first attempt.

Tianna McKinney finished 15thin the prelims of the 200 meter dash running 24.61 out of Heat 3. She returned to the track to run the anchor leg on the 4x400 meter relay that finished 10thin 3:46.61.

Cayli Yarbrough finished her collegiate career with a 17thplace finish in the high jump with a clearance of 5-4.5 (1.64m).

The Lady Buffs finish off the championships on Saturday, May 25, with the women's shot put at 1:15 p.m. followed by the triple jump at 4:45 p.m.
