Lady Buffs defeat Colorado Mesa 7-3 to open regional play

West Texas A&M's Kylee Moore went 3-of-3 from the plate including a pair of home runs as the No. 10 Lady Buffs defeated Colorado Mesa 7-3 in the opening game of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional 1 at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field in Kingsville, Texas to improve to 3-1 all-time against the Mavericks in postseason play.

The Lady Buffs advance to play No. 3 and top seed Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, May 10, at 2 p.m.

CMU scored in the first inning on AnnMarie Torres' one out single up the middle to plate Brooke Doumer, who lead the game off with a single. The Lady Buffs responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie it 1-all. Moore doubled through the right side before moving over to third on Shanna McBroom's one out single up the middle. Moore would score for the first time in the game on a double steal as McBroom was safe at second.

The Mavericks retook the lead in the top of the second inning highlighted by Kellie Mrofcza's two out double to right. Jordyn Hays was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before coming around to score on a throwing error from McBroom after Alexandria Dufour put the ball in play. Following the second out of the inning, Mrofcza doubled to right giving CMU a 3-1 lead.

WT would take their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs, two of those coming off the bat of Moore. Brittany Cruz reached base after getting hit by a pitch with the Mavericks returning the favor with an error of their own on Alyx Cordell's bunt that saw Cruz score from first. Moore was up next and sent the first pitch she saw over the wall in left field for her first home run in five games. The senior would add to her home run total in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo shot to right field.

Miranda Grotenhuis would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with her eighth home run of the season. The Mavericks walked Moore to open the inning followed by two consecutive outs to left field before Grotenhuis made it 7-3 with the Buffs third home run of the game.

Shayne Starkey (16-5) went the distance for the 11thtime this season holding the Mavericks to three runs (one earned) on seven hits with a strikeout.
