Buffs advance to Lone Star Conference Title Game

The WTAMU Buffs used a complete game shutout by senior Joe Corbett as the Edmond native became the program's all-time leader in wins and strikeouts, WT tied a program record for victories while also advancing to the 2019 Lone Star Conference Title Game with a 2-0 victory over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas at Wilder Park.

WTAMU advances to their fourth straight and fifth overall LSC Title Game on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. at Wilder Park against the Cameron Aggies with the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Postseason on the line.

The Buffs got on the board in the first inning as Jake Pederson doubled to left center to score Keone Givens with no outs followed later in the inning by a passed ball with two outs to score Pederson from third for the 2-0 lead. Joe Corbett saw four Javelinas base runners over the first three frames as the senior stranded the bases loaded in the first and picked off a runner at first to end the top of the third while registering four strikeouts.

Corbett set a new program strikeout record in the seventh on his 96th pitch of the afternoon to run his career total to 225 while passing Raymond Bergara (2001-05). The Hogs threatened in the top of the eighth with a bloop single to left field with two outs before Clay Koelzer gunned down a runner at second trying to steal to end the inning with WT leading 2-0.

That turned out to be all that Corbett would need as the senior tossed a complete game shutout, striking out 13 Javelinas on 133 total pitches as the right-hander walked three and allowed just five hits to move to 12-0 on the season to set a new single-season wins mark for the Buffs. Corbett passed former Buff Jason Patrick (22, 1994-97) for the all-time wins mark in program history.
