Investigators say an electrical short-circuit likely caused the fire that ravaged Notre Dame Cathedral earlier this week, a French official told the Associated Press on Thursday.
The official, who is reportedly part of the French judicial police and spoke on the condition of anonymity, added that investigators still haven't received approval to work in the cathedral or to search through the rubble because of safety concerns.
The cathedral was undergoing renovations when a massive fire broke out on Monday, destroying much of the building, including its famous spire and some stained-glass windows.
The cathedral was ultimately saved from a total collapse after authorities initially predicted the fire could lead to its destruction. There were no deaths caused by the fire.
French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to rebuild the cathedral "even more beautifully."
“We will rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral even more beautifully. We can do it, and once again, we will mobilize," he said earlier this week.
