One person dead after Sunday morning fire in Northwest Amarillo


Early Sunday morning, crew from the Amarillo Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire at 12:55 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3. A total of eight AFD units responded to the fire and had the fire under control by 2:00 a.m.

When firefighters arrived at the house located at 1419 N.W. 10th, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the structure. Witnesses on the scene told firefighters there was someone inside of the burning home.

Firefighters attempted to enter the home, but were met with extremely high heat and blinding smoke conditions. Despite intense heat and smoke conditions, firefighters were able to enter the home and found one person deceased.

Two other occupants of the home, including a baby, successfully escaped the home. Both were transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

Investigators on the scene confirmed the deceased individual attempted to reenter the burning home after helping the other two escape from the flames. It's unknown at this time why the victim attempted to reenter the burning home.
