2 men taken to hospital after train hits truck west of Canyon

Thursday afternoon, multiple agencies responded to a train versus vehicle accident between Canyon and Umbarger on U.S. 60.

According to the Randall County Fire Department, a Ford F-250 traveling south on Johnson Ranch Road was struck by a westbound freight train. Two men in the truck were taken to a area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“The train crashed into the back-rear quarter panel of the pickup, causing it to roll over,” said Sgt. Cindy Barkley, DPS safety education and media coordinator.

Investigators said no members of the train crew were injured during this incident. The road and tracks remained closed at this time as BNSF officials and law enforcement continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

“The lead locomotive was camera equipped,” said Joe Faust, BNSF Railway director of public affairs. “We will work with law enforcement officials to determine exactly what happened. The video will be able to tell us everything that happened -- whether all protocols were followed.”
