Jack Sorenson named 2018 Western Heritage honoree by the Amarillo Tri-State Exposition

Jack Sorenson
Jack Sorenson of Amarillo has been named the 2018 Western Heritage honoree by the Amarillo Tri-State Exposition.

The award, which began in 1996, honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the agricultural industry and surrounding communities in the Golden Spread area.

Jack Sorenson grew up entrenched in the Old West lifestyle in Six Gun City, a dude ranch and frontier town on the rim of Palo Duro Canyon, then owned by his late father.

In his youth, Sorenson drove a stagecoach, performed as a gunfighter, and trained horses. His artistic talents were obvious at an early age; by 1974, he began painting full-time for ten hours a day or more. Shortly afterward, Sorenson’s first one-man Western art show sold out, and he hasn’t slowed down since.

As a renowned local artist, Sorenson has garnered acclaim for his touching renderings of the Old West lifestyle, religious subjects, and Palo Duro Canyon. He has lent his “God-given” artistic talents to fundraising for a variety of organizations, including the American Quarter Horse Association, Palo Duro State Park, the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, the Eveline Rivers Christmas Project, and the Diocese of Amarillo, among others. The majority of these organizations support the preservation and appreciation of the Western way of life.

Sorenson’s art has been featured in and on over five dozen Western magazines, most notably in a December issue of Western Horseman. His work has also been featured on top-selling greeting cards and in two books.

Sorenson will be presented at the Exposition’s Boots & Business event on September 8, in the Commercial Exhibits Hall at 6:00 p.m. Scholarship recipients Kennedy Smith (Amarillo), Sadie Bow (Happy), and Kaleigh Meador (Bushland) will also be presented.

The 2018 Tri-State Fair and Rodeo is September 14-22, at the Tri-State Exposition grounds in Amarillo.
