Buffs fall to Tarleton 44-7 in LSC opener

The West Texas A&M Buffalos dropped their Lone Star Conference opener 44-7 to Tarleton on Saturday night in front of 5,542 fans at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. The loss drops the Buffs to 1-2 on the season while the Texans improve to 2-0.

WT's defense held the Texan offense in check for their first three drives of the first quarter until Joanly Martinez kicked a 34-yard goal to give the visitors a 3-0 lead with 1:30 minutes remaining. The Texans would score on a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second quarter to make it 16-0 with 7:07 left before halftime.

The Buffs offense got going right before the intermission when Duke Carter IV ran it in from five yards out to complete a 10-play, 52-yard drive that lasted 2:53. Carter IV started the drive off with a 6-yard run from WT's own 48-yard line followed by a 23-yard pass from Justin Houghtaling to Semaj Mitchell. Houghtaling found David Leonty for another first down to get into the red zone for the first time in the game. On third-and-goal, Carter IV absorbed contact from multiple Texans en route to the end zone.  The Texans responded by taking the kickoff back 96 yards to make it 23-3 at half time.

Tarleton would score on their first two drives of the second half to make it 37-7 with 8:51 remaining in the third quarter. WT would respond with a 10-play, 52-yard drive but was unable to cut into the lead with a turnover in the red zone.

Houghtaling threw for 71 yards completing 7 of 10 passes with a long of 23 after coming off the bench. Carter IV was the leading rusher with 46 yards on 22 attempts and a touchdown while Semaj Mitchell had 46 yards on a game-high six receptions. James Clark and Christopher Thomas recorded double-digit tackles for the second time this season with 13 and 11 respectively.

The Buffs will head to Western New Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 22, before stepping out of conference play for a game against #15 Central Washington on Sept. 29.
