Motorcycle street race leads to the death of one man, another arrested

Late Thursday night, Amarillo police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Northeast 19th Ave and North Manhattan Street, on a crash involving two motorcycles.

Upon their arrival, officer informed that 45 year old Sammy DeLeon, Male had been westbound on Northeast 19th approaching North Manhattan on a black Honda Motorcycle. Racing him westbound on Northeast 19th , was 31 year old Stephen Lee Philpot II, on a white/red Yamaha Motorcycle.

The Yamaha and the Honda collided, and DeLeon was thrown off of his motorcycle. DeLeon was taken to a local area hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Justice of the Peace Rich Herman has ordered an autopsy. DeLeon's next of kin was notified. 

Philpot attempted to flee the scene but was captured. When arrested, Philpot was in possession of marijuana and THC wax. He was later booked into Potter County Sheriff’s Office Jail for Racing causing serious bodily injury, Accident causing serious bodily injury, possession of marijuana and possession of controlled substance, penalty group 2.

Speed and no helmet were factors in this collision. The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
