Suspects arrested for 2015 Amarillo murder

The Amarillo Police Department Special Crimes Unit recently received information that helped identify the suspects in the 2015 murder of 25 year old Roberto Guadalupe Vasquez.

It was learned there were 4 suspects involved. At the time of the murder, 2 suspects were juvenile males, ages 15 and 16. On July 10, 2018, directives to apprehend these 2 suspects were issued. They were subsequently booked into the Potter County Correction Center that day.

The adult suspects were both incarcerated in the Randall County Jail for unrelated charges and murder warrants were served while they were in jail. Thery were identified as Melchor James Vences, age 22 and Brendan Paul Givens, age 20. Vences and Givens remain in the Randall County Jail at this time.

On December 21, 2015, at approximately 9:00 pm, Amarillo police officers were dispatched to the rear house at 1736 SE 8th on a man who had been shot.  Officers arrived and discovered that Vasquez had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the upper body.

Vasquez was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

During the initial stages of the investigation officers determined Vasquez was shot near the front house at 1736 SE 8th. Special Crimes investigators believed a person with knowledge of the shooting was still inside the house and would not answer the door.

The Amarillo Police Department SWAT Team was called to assist in searching the house. The SWAT Team along with deputies from the Randall County Sheriff’s Office Hard Entry and Tactical Team (H.E.A.T.T.) made contact with a person inside the house and that person was questioned by investigators.
