Old motel in Canyon burns after law enforcement training excercise

Monday evening, the Amarillo Fire Department, Canyon Fire Department, and Randall County Fire Department responded to fire at the old Canyon Inn hotel located across from Canyon High School.

Randall County Sheriff’s dispatch received a call at 6:30 pm this evening regarding smoke coming from a room on the second floor of the old Canyon Inn.

This motel has been abandoned for some time and is owned by a nearby church. The building was set to be torn down and the property will be turned into a parking lot for the church.

The church had allowed use of the old motel to conduct a joint training exercise by the Randall County Sheriff’s Special Operations Unit and the U.S. Department of Energy. Distraction and breaching devices were being used. These devices have small explosive components but it is not certain exactly what started the fire.

Training had ended approximately 2 to 3 hours prior to the fire starting. The fire was first spotted in a room on the second floor and spread to other rooms in the portion of the building that runs east and west.

The Canyon Fire Department first arrived on the scene and called for mutual aid from the Randall County Fire Department. U.S. Highway 87 is closed from the south city limits of Canyon to Pondasetta Road due to fire hoses being across the roadway.

There were no injuries reported and no definite cause has been determined.
