Local fire departments battle junk blaze west of Canyon

Wednesday afternoon, the Amarillo Fire Department, Canyon Fire Department, and Randall County Fire Department responded to a junk and grass fire west of Canyon on Gordon Cummings Road.

Officials said the fire started in a large collection of junk cars, metal, tires, etc, located behind some homes in the area. A second grass fire started from the original blaze.

The Amarillo Fire Department Hazmat responded to the scene in case firefighters encountered and dangerous chemicals or toxic fumes.

Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fires and prevent them from threatening homes in the immediate area. Units will remain on the scene and monitor the fire until it is completely out.

Investigators have not released the cause of the fire at this time.
