APD releases results of latest Click it or Ticket campaign

The Click it or Ticket campaign ran from May 21, 2018 through June 3rd, 2018. The Amarillo Police Department received a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to fund extra officers to concentrate on and enforce seatbelt and child restraint laws during that period.

During this effort, there were 319 seatbelt citations issued, 21 child restraint citations issued, 63 speeding citations issued, 19 Distracted Driving citations (cell phone use while driving) and 165 warnings/citations for “other violations” were issued.  Grant funded officers made twenty two municipal misdemeanor level arrests and two county court charge level arrest, two felony arrests, serving one hundred warrants in the course of the arrests.

A survey of four different locations within the city was completed prior to the beginning of the campaign.  It revealed a seatbelt usage rate of 85.4%.  A survey of the same four locations was completed after the enforcement period, and it revealed a seatbelt usage rate of 93.0%. That’s an increase of 7.6 percentage points. If this seatbelt usage rate can continue to increase throughout the year, it will go far in reducing deaths and injuries from traffic collisions within the city.

Seatbelt and child restraint enforcement will continue to be strict in Amarillo, even with the Click it or Ticket campaign coming to an end. The Amarillo Police Department currently has a comprehensive traffic grant from the Texas Department of Transportation that funds extra officers to concentrate enforcement efforts on DWI, Speeding, Seatbelt, and Child Restraint laws throughout the year. Wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 45% for car occupants and 60% for light truck occupants.
