Lady Buffs season ends with 4-3 loss to Cameron


The #10 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M took an early 2-0 lead but gave up a four run fifth inning as they ended their 2018 season with a 4-3 loss to the Cameron Aggies during the South Central Regional Tournament at Mayer Field in San Angelo, Texas.

Shanna McBroom registered the first hit of the game in the bottom of the second inning as the sophomore singled to left field on the ninth-pitch of her at bat with one out, Stevie McLemore singled to center followed two batters later by an Alyx Cordell walk to load the bases with two outs before a Shayne Starkey two-run single to right gave WT a 2-0 lead.

Kilee Halbert was strong in the circle again as the senior didn't allow a hit until the top of the fifth inning with one out as the Aggies loaded the bases before Raley Long grounded out to Ursula Del Campo at first for an RBI followed by an RBI single to short by Callie Busby to tie the game at 2-2. Cameron wasn't done yet as a double-steal plate the leading run with two outs followed by a long at-bat by Tori Smith that ended in an RBI single to left to make it 4-2.

Van Gurp cut into the Cameron lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo homerun to left field with two outs but a grounder to short ended the game and WT's season, 4-3. Halbert picked up the loss (22-8) in her final career game in Maroon & White, allowing four runs on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts in her 4.2 innings of work.
