Lady Buffs come up short in Lone Star Conference title game

The #10 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M tied up the game in the top of the fifth inning but a four-run home half of the frame by the #6 Belles of Angelo State sent ASU to the 2018 Lone Star Conference Championship in front of a rowdy crowd at Mayer Field on Saturday afternoon.

One of the best rivalries in Division II Softball lived up to the hype as the teams traded runs in the first three innings as a Suka Van Gurp sac fly to center field with the bases loaded and one out in the third tied the game at 1-1. Angelo answered as Taegan Kirk lifted a two-run homerun to left field in the top of the fourth inning to give the Belles a 3-1 advantage.

WT responded in the top of the fifth inning as Shayne Starkey doubled to left field with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in Ashley Hardin and Alyx Cordell to tie the game at 3-3. Angelo would retake the lead in the home half of the inning as a pair of RBI walks were followed by an RBI single to center by Brooke Mangold and a sac fly by Madison Greenwell to make it 7-3. Stevie McLemore cut into the lead in the top of the sixth inning as the sophomore crushed a solo shot to left field but that's all the offense that the Lady Buffs could produce as they fell, 7-4.

Kilee Halbert picked up the loss in the circle (21-7) for the Lady Buffs, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with six walks and no strikeouts in her 4.1 innings of work. Halbert was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Hardin, Kylee Moore and Kourtney Coveney.

The Lady Buffs will now turn their attention to the NCAA Division II Softball postseason as the selection of the 64-team field will take place on Monday, May 7th at 9 a.m. CT via an online selection show at
