Buffs defeat Tarleton State in South Central Regional opener

Behind an outstanding complete game performance from junior Joe Corbett and timely hitting, the No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team opened the 2018 NCAA South Central Regional with a 7-2 win over Tarleton State Thursday evening.

The Buffs tallied seven runs on eight hits with one error, while TSU had two runs on five hits with one error.

Bryan 3 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBI with the home run.Freshman Tommy Williams went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while Carter was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Corbett tossed his team-leading fourth complete game of the season and first of nine innings as he allowed five hits, two runs – one earned, walked two and fanned nine.

Tarleton State, who hit seven home runs in the LSC Championship game, was held to five hits by five different Texans, as Hudson was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the team.

Flanagan replaced Fletcher going 0.2 innings, allowing one hit after Fletcher exited.

In five trips to the NCAA Tournament, this marks the third time the Buffs have opened the tournament with a victory and first since 2015.The Buffs defeated Tarleton State in the opener in 2014 and St. Edward's in 2015.WT started the 2014 regional going 2-0 before a pair of losses ended the season.

WT now is 5-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

This marked the 26th win of the season at Wilder Park, tying the school-record for home victories in a season set in 1997.

The Buffs will face St. Edward's Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the second round of the regional.
