San Marcos police officer shot and killed

San Marcos police officer Kenneth Copeland, 58, was shot and killed on Monday, while he and other officers attempted to serve a warrant on a man wanted for a crime of violence.

The officers were ambushed at the man's home and Officer Copeland was struck multiple times. He was transported in a patrol car to Central Texas Medical Center where he succumbed to his wounds.

The suspect surrendered following a brief standoff with members of the Hays County SWAT team.

Officer Copeland had served with the San Marcos Police Department for 19 years. He was working an overtime shift on the day he was slain.

Copeland is survived by his wife and four children.

Copeland is the first officer killed in the line of duty in the San Marcos Police Department’s history.
