Rioters hurled smoke bombs, broke windows and started a bonfire prompting University of California at Berkeley officials to cancel a talk Wednesday by a polarizing editor of Breitbart News out of safety concerns.
A University of California Berkeley spokesman says a small group turned protests violent, as Yiannopoulos came to speak. The spokesman added that it's not a proud day for the Berkeley campus.
“The left is profoundly antithetical to free speech these days, does not want to hear alternative points of view, and will do anything to shut it down,” Yiannopoulos told Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Wednesday night. “My point is being proven over and over and over again.”
“If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view – NO FEDERAL FUNDS?” President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter early Thursday morning.
