Amarillo City Councilwoman Lisa Blake announces she will not run for Place 2 seat

Amarillo City Councilwoman Lisa Blake announced on Monday that she will not seek her own term for the Place 2 seat.

Citing family as her reason for not running.

“Being selected to serve on the City Council has been a privilege and an honor. Considering the upcoming election and the current needs of my family — and my growing family — I have made the decision not to run for election in May because of my family needs.”

Blake has thrown her support behind Freda Powell. Powell announced her intentions to run for Place 2.

“Freda is a lady of leadership, she is a lady of integrity and she is passionate about our city and our community.

"I think it's important to have a woman on council. I think women bring a different perspective and I know that I brought strong leadership skills and I also brought passion," Blake said

Powell is the General Manager of Warford-Walker Mortuary. She is a graduate of Amarillo High School and Amarillo College.

“I would like our city government to increase its focus on serving the real needs and interests of the people, our taxpayers who live, work and play in Amarillo, and on preserving and enhancing our many positive assets.

"My goal is for us to have a united voice and for us to work together and sometimes we'll have to agree to disagree as a council but at least we have done our due diligence and our research," Powell said.

Blake was appointed 6 months ago to serve out the term of former City Councilman Dr. Brian Eades. She has served as the Executive Director of Leadership Amarillo & Canyon since July of 2012.
