Man killed after colliding with BNSF train


Sunday afternoon, one person was killed after his vehicle collided with a BNSF train in East Amarillo.

Amarillo police say that 27 year old Steven Sorrells was driving a 2004 Chevy Impala southbound in the 500 block of North Eastern Street as a BNSF train was eastbound. Investigators confirmed that Sorrells went around the raiilroad crossing signals and guardrail.

The BNSF train struck Sorrells' vehicle on the driver’s side. Sorrells died as a result of the injuries he received in the collision.

BNSF train resumed operations late Sunday afternoon after the wreckage was cleared from the tracks.

The Amarillo Police Department continues to investigate this incident.
