Search continues for missing oil rig worker

Search and rescue is underway for a worker missing after an explosion on a rig on Lake Pontchartrain near Kenner, La. Seven others were taken to area hospitals. Three are in critical condition, and some have been treated and released.

Some Kenner residents in in the Chateau Lakefront and Woodlake Estates subdivisions reported hearing a loud explosion. Kenner firefighters and police inspected those neighborhoods both Sunday night and this morning and found no indications of any damage.

“I am currently glad to report no injuries and no structural damage in the city,” said Kenner Mayor Ben Zahn. “We are appreciative to everyone who called to report the explosion, and I want to thank both the Kenner Fire Department and the Kenner Police Department for reacting so quickly to this incident.”

Zahn said the explosion occurred in unincorporated waters in the lake – outside of Kenner city limits - giving Jefferson Parish officials incident command responsibilities.

However, Kenner firefighters assisted in the evacuation of the injured rig workers Sunday night, Zahn said. “Myself, Chief Glaser and the Kenner Fire Department have offered any assistance that Jefferson Parish may need.”
