Oil rig burning on Lake Pontchartrain: Several injuries reported

A Louisiana police department says an oil rig has exploded on Lake Pontchartrain near the city of Kenner, some 14 miles northwest of New Orleans.

Authorities on the scene report that cleaning chemicals ignited on the surface of the oil rig platform. Seven crew members were rescued and are being treated at local hospitals.

Kenner Police Department spokesman Sgt. Brian McGregor said Sunday evening that rescue boats were being sent from the Kenner Boat Launch, and that officials with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office are assisting, The Times-Picayune reported .

There were "a lot of injuries," many of them serious, with at least seven confirmed and more expected, McGregor said.

The fire on the rig near the St. Charles Parish/Kenner line is being fought by boat and the Kenner Fire Department is involved in the suppression efforts.
