Amarillo mayor Paul Harpole announces he will not seek re-election: Throws support behind Ginger Nelson

On Tuesday, Amarillo mayor Paul Harpole announced he will not be seeking re-election.

“I am honored and proud to have served Amarillo. One of the best parts of being mayor was helping manage the city’s growth rather than having the growth managing us.

“It’s time for others to step forward and lead this city. I see people who can lead and unify and continue to move this city forward without an agenda.

"If we had good candidates coming forward it was time for us to look for new leadership to lead the city to bind us together and have a vision for the future and I see those good leaders stepping forward so it is time for me to step aside," Harpole said.

Harpole said one on the good leaders he supports is mayoral candidate Ginger Nelson.

"She came to me early and told me that she had plans to consider this, asked me what I thought and I said, just what I said a minute ago,

"I hope good candidates will come forward and lead this city in the future," Harpole said.
